“At precisely this moment someone, somewhere is getting ready to ride.” – Melissa Holbrook Pierson

A virtual racing suit Bodywork is a design concept for a women’s motorcycle suit. Substituting sponsor’s logos with autobiographical content and Moto language to communicate the emotion of the racer, Simone LeAmon designed the exhibition suit for her avatar – a racer. Tattooed across the surface of the skin-tight suit are Swans, Pole Stars, Pocket Rockets, Twin Heads and Throttle Butterflies as like heraldry on the armour of a medieval knight. Exploring the categorisation of practice and production Bodywork uses the space of Simone LeAmon’s own body to speak of the disciplinary and corporate cultures of art and design practice. Bodywork features in the animation work Heartland.

“Art is one place where otherwise unrelated pleasures, people, ideas, and forms encounter each other in new ways; design is another, where such encounters are typically justified by commerce. In LeAmon’s exhibition MOTO Showroom: The return of desire, objects, graphics, clothing and animations slipped between art and design with LeAmon transfigured in the image of a motorcycle racer” – Justin Clemens, 2003

Bodywork utilised 3D modelling software and expertise particular to the motion picture industry. The software manufacturers Alias Wavefront sponsored the collaborative relation between Simone LeAmon and Daryl Munton in 2003. The project was profiled in a case study on the Alias International website to promote the software in pursuit of artistic outcomes. Bodywork was exhibited in Milan in 2003, facilitating new opportunities for Simone LeAmon with the Italian design and manufacturing industry. The project has traversed disciplinary and cultural frames acclaimed by the creative and commercial sectors in Australia and Italy.
